How a Job Runs

You call or fill in the quote form and tell us what you've noticed and where. An electrician comes out, looks at the problem and explains in plain terms what needs doing and why. You then get a free estimate, and the work goes ahead only once you've agreed to it. When the job's finished, we tidy up after ourselves.

The Houses and Power Supply Around Here

A lot of the housing in the area is older. Census survey figures for the Gadsden City School District, whose boundaries are close to the city's though not identical, put about 70% of its homes as built before 1970. The Electrical Safety Foundation (ESFI) suggests an electrical inspection once a home reaches 40 years old. It also suggests one for any home of 10 years or more once it has been through a major renovation, gained an addition or taken on a major new appliance. Houses from the late 1960s and early 1970s deserve a second look for aluminum branch circuits: the Consumer Product Safety Commission dates that wiring to new homes built from 1965 to the mid-1970s, and traced its fire risk to the connections, where the wire can overheat. Our electrical wiring and repair page covers what we look for in an older house.

Power here has a long local history. Alabama Power's Plant Gadsden, on the bank of the Coosa River, went online in September 1913 and ran until it was retired on January 1, 2023, with most of its output going to homes. In 1966 the company also built H. Neely Henry Dam on the Coosa in Etowah County, and the lake behind it covers 11,200 acres with 339 miles of shoreline.

Today, depending on your address, your electricity comes from Alabama Power or, in some areas, from an electric cooperative such as Cherokee Electric or Marshall-DeKalb Electric. An outage on the lines is the supplier's to fix. A fault on your side of the meter is ours.

The Towns We Cover

Gadsden. The Etowah County seat, with the Coosa River running through the middle of town. The I-759 connector links it to Interstate 59, and US Highways 278, 411 and 431 serve the city. The downtown historic district lines Broad Street, and Noccalula Falls Park, about two miles from downtown, is where the falls drop 90 feet into Black Creek Gorge.

Attalla. West of Gadsden, with I-759 running east out of town and US 11 and I-59 passing through. The 2020 Census counted 5,827 residents.

Rainbow City. Incorporated in 1950, it reaches from Gadsden on its northern side to the Coosa on its eastern side, with Rainbow Drive (US 411) through the middle.

Southside. Southside lies on the Coosa's south bank and takes in parts of both Etowah and Calhoun counties. It was incorporated in 1957, and its City Hall stands on Highway 77.

Glencoe. US 431 cuts through this town, which spreads across southern Etowah County and northern Calhoun County. The Encyclopedia of Alabama puts its population at 5,125.

Check an Electrician's License Before You Hire

Alabama's licensing statute (Code of Alabama §34-36-13) says that, outside the exemptions it lists, electrical contracting firms, master electricians and journeyman electricians all need a license, issued either by the state board or by a local government. The Alabama Electrical Contractors Board issues electrical contractor and journeyman licenses, and anyone can use its Licensee Search at aecb.alabama.gov.

A quick search tells you whether the person about to open your panel holds a license. It's worth doing whoever you hire.

About Us: FAQs

  • Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Before you hire any electrician, you can check their license on the Licensee Search run by the Alabama Electrical Contractors Board.

  • Which areas do you serve?

Gadsden, Attalla, Rainbow City, Southside and Glencoe. If you're close by but not in one of those towns, call and ask.

  • Do you charge for an estimate?

No. Estimates are free, and the estimate is the figure you agree to before the work starts. The cost guides quoted on our service pages are general local ranges, not our prices.

  • Do you work on older homes?

Yes, including houses with old fuse boxes, older wiring and panels that are short of breaker space. We'll explain what needs fixing now and what can wait.

  • Who do I call if the power goes out?

Your supplier first: Alabama Power takes outage reports on 1-800-888-2726 or by texting OUT to APCOUT (272688), and co-op members report to their cooperative. If the outage seems to be yours alone, give us a call as well.

  • Do you do commercial work?

Yes, for small business premises, from repairs and new lighting to wiring a shop or office fit-out.

  • Do you clean up afterwards?

Always. The work area is cleared when we leave.
