Outlets, Switches & GFCI Protection

An outlet that feels warm, scorches the cover plate or loses its grip on a plug often has a loose or worn connection behind it, and that's the kind of fault that shouldn't wait. The Electrical Safety Foundation (ESFI) lists switch plates or outlet covers too hot to touch comfortably among the signs that call for a licensed electrician, alongside a smell of hot insulation.

Older rooms often have no GFCI outlets at all. A GFCI cuts the power automatically when current leaks to ground, which is why kitchens, bathrooms, garages and outdoor receptacles are on ESFI's list of places that need one. In a house built before the rules caught up, a porch or carport outlet may have no protection at all, and swapping it for a weather-resistant GFCI is usually a small job. Two-prong outlets turn up in plenty of houses from that era, and we can tell you whether a grounded circuit or GFCI protection is the right fix for each one.

Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detectors

We install and replace hardwired smoke detectors that run on the home's 120-volt supply, and we add carbon monoxide alarms where a house has gas appliances, an attached garage or a backup generator. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends CO alarms with a battery or battery backup on every level of the home, so a hardwired unit should have battery backup to keep working when the power drops. That matters in Alabama, which NWS Birmingham says has two severe weather seasons, spring and fall: by CPSC's count, portable generators cause an average of roughly 100 US carbon monoxide deaths each year.

Electrical Inspections for Older Homes

ESFI's advice is to have a home's wiring inspected once the house turns 40, and sooner, from age 10, after big changes such as a remodel, an extension or a major new appliance. Any house built before 1987 is at or past that point. Across the Gadsden City School District, Census survey figures put 70% of housing before 1970, so most local homes passed it long ago.

There's no statewide electrical code for Alabama homes. According to the International Association of Electrical Inspectors, the 2020 National Electrical Code the state adopted in 2022 covers only state buildings, schools and hotels. Rewiring & Aluminum Wiring

Rewiring makes sense when the old wiring can't be trusted or can't be extended: brittle insulation, knob-and-tube runs, ungrounded circuits through most of the house, or a string of past repairs nobody can account for. Rewiring can sometimes be done one floor or a few rooms at a time.

CPSC dates aluminum branch wiring in new homes to 1965 through the mid-1970s, and says houses older than 1965 are unlikely to have it. CPSC traced the fire risk to the connections, where resistance can build up until they overheat. Dedicated Circuits & 240-Volt Outlets

A dedicated circuit feeds one appliance and nothing else, so a range, dryer, freezer or window AC unit isn't sharing a breaker with half a room. We run 240-volt circuits for ranges, dryers, workshop tools and Level 2 EV chargers, which the US Department of Energy says use 240 volts for faster home charging. For a slower Level 1 charge overnight, the DOE notes that an outlet on its own dedicated branch circuit near where you park is all many owners need. A shed, detached garage or hot tub gets its own circuit run out from the panel too.

Before a heavy load goes on, the panel needs room for it. If it hasn't got that room, a panel upgrade comes first.

When a Wiring Fault Can't Wait

If you smell burning or hot plastic, see scorch marks or hear sizzling at an outlet or switch, stop using it and turn off its breaker if you can do so safely. Smoke or flame means everyone out and a call to 911. When a breaker trips, CPSC's advice is to track down the cause instead of just switching it back on, since a trip is often a sign of an overloaded circuit.
